Homekeeping: Good and Bad Smells in the Home

When most people think about bad smells they think about potty smells and body odors. That’s probably because these things embarrass us culturally. But when indoors today, we are more likely to be assaulted by a different type of offensive odor – that created by chemicals.

Here are some common sources of offensive unnatural smells: fabric softener, detergent, air fresheners, new clothing, PVC / vinyl, chlorinated water, artificial perfumes, carpet, new paint, and artificially-scented candles. These can torment folks with heightened senses of smells, and are unhealthy for everyone as they offgas.

On the other hand, here are some pleasing natural smells: natural wood, essential oils, clay paint, houseplants, fresh air from an open window, and cooking food. If you’re interested in bringing Nature into your home and life, try adding more of these and less from the first group.

However, for some chemically sensitive folks, even natural, normally healthy smells can be problematic, so make sure you ask if you’re trying to help someone out by improving the olfactory element. And remember, the nose knows.
